Education and entertainment are infinite in the 50 performances of resident companies that highlight the area’s rich, local talent soft soled ballet slippers. In addition to the speaker series, the artists of Del Valle Fine Arts, Livermore-Amador Symphony, Livermore Valley Opera, Pacific Chamber Orchestra, Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre and Valley Dance Theatre appear throughout the season as hometown “anchors.”. After a glittery “Brilliance at the Bankhead” gala featuring singer Judy Collins (Sept. 10), it would be wrong to assume the lights will dim. In addition to all the shows called out here, there’s bluegrass and Celtic music (“The Tri-Valley loves roots music,” says Kenison); comedy from solo performers, group acts and stunt dogs; “Art and Wine Intertwined” gatherings with live music and wine tastings; and more. Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony made the point with considerable style and flair Wednesday evening at Davies Symphony Hall, reviving Leonard Bernstein’s exuberant 1944 musical in a semistaged production that felt about as fully realized as this great American classic can get. Adapted from the Jerome Robbins ballet “Fancy Free,” which featured a Bernstein score, “On the Town” was made into a Broadway hit with the addition of book, lyrics and narration by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Funny, sexy and ineffably poignant, it’s the story of three sailors on a 24-hour shore leave, looking for love and a last hurrah in New York City before shipping off to battle soft soled ballet slippers. Forever linked to the triumphs and sorrows that marked the end of World War II, the show has been revived on Broadway, reworked as a film and performed in numerous concert versions..

Tilson Thomas, who has scored repeated hits with semistaged operas and musicals throughout his tenure as the Symphony’s music director, may be uniquely suited to return to Bernstein’s youthful hit. The conductor led the San Francisco Symphony in the U.S. premiere of the concert version in 1996 and recorded the complete score with the London Symphony on Deutsche Grammophon. At Wednesday’s performance, which repeats through Sunday afternoon, Tilson Thomas was at the center of a production distinguished by dazzling musical episodes. Leading a well-calibrated orchestra and a cast comprised of principals from the show’s 2014 Broadway revival, a handful of opera artists and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, the conductor brought the show’s thrilling dance sequences, jazzy interludes, comic songs and wistful ballads into high relief, savoring every rhythmic nuance and snappy turn of phrase along the way soft soled ballet slippers. From the swagger of Act I’s “New York, New York” to the raucous Act II “Conga Cabana,” there were buoyant moments throughout..

Director James Darrah staged the action on multiple levels, with playing spaces behind and in front of the orchestra. Members of Ragnar Bohlin’s chorus were seated on upper tiers soft soled ballet slippers. Scenic designs by Emily Anne MacDonald and Cameron Jaye Mock, costumes by Peabody Southwell, and lighting by Pablo Santiago fused nicely. Adam Larsen’s projections featured historic black-and-white street scenes and colorful Times Square billboards; the sultry Coney Island ballet unfolded before a massive, multicolored Ferris wheel..

The three sailors, all from the Broadway revival, were excellent. Tony Yazbeck’s virile, smooth-voiced Gabey, Clyde Alves’ peppy Ozzie and Jay Armstrong Johnson’s malleable Chip are all strong singer-dancers. Alysha Umphress, a Bay Area native, was an ideal Hildy; her brassy “Come Up to My Place” (a sort of prototype for “West Side Story’s” “Gee, Officer Krupke”) and saucy “I Can Cook, Too” pretty much stole the show’s first half soft soled ballet slippers.
