“I curated this program for the 25th anniversary season,” Fushille said, including “some of Smuin’s work, but also wanted to acknowledge some of the dance choreographers from our dance ranks. We have the Choreography Showcase that I started, where dancers can create works on one another. We take time out of the schedule, give them studio space, costumes, shoes, dancers — it’s quite an expensive endeavor padded dance shoes. But it’s so important! They just don’t wake up and know how to choreograph.”..

And, she said, “I am so proud of the dancers we are attracting now.  The technical strength and proficiency has never been higher.”. Smuin for years has been operating out of two buildings on Market Street in San Francisco, one for administrative offices, the other for rehearsals that had to be scheduled around the programs of someone else’s dance school. That is to change, Fushille said, when the company moves into a building it has purchased at 17th and Potrero. “We’re hoping to be in the building around Labor Day,” Fushille said. “It will be a real game-changer for us. We’ve always had a lot of running back and forth. It will help us have a great understanding of what each team (administrative and dance) is doing padded dance shoes. It will be incredibly solidifying for us as a team, to be in the same place.”..

Fushille credits the company’s supporters and donors with making it possible. Only about 40 percent of the company’s revenues come from ticket sales. The rest come from fundraising events, which is common for non-profit arts companies. “We have a devoted and loyal donor base,” Fushille said. “People have stretched to help us realize this dream. So many other non-profits have left the city, or just folded padded dance shoes. We’ve always run a tight ship. We’ve done extraordinary things on a tight budget..

“This building will allow us to offer classes padded dance shoes. And we won’t have to worry about the studio being torn down and turned into housing. “. Dance Series 01 includes two works by Michael Smuin — “Schubert Scherzo,” and “The Eternal Idol.” There are three numbers developed in the Choreography Showcase Fushille started, “Merely Players” by Nicole Haskins, “Echo” by Ben Needham-Wood, and “Sinfonietta” by Rex Wheeler. The final piece is by Smuin favorite Trey McIntyre, “Blue Until June,” using music of blues great Etta James..

McIntyre is “often drawn to popular music,” Fushille said. “These lyrics resonate with him. He was a big fan of Etta James. He was looking at love and relationships, people searching for the right relationships. … Sometimes in a haze, looking for the right things.”. The piece includes bit of many Etta James hits, including “Seven Day Fool,” “You Can’t Talk to a Fool,” “My Dearest Darling,” “If I Can’t Have You,” “Fool That I Am,” “I’d Rather Go Blind” and, of course, “At Last.” padded dance shoes.
