The dancers were in top form – clean lines, tight ensemble work and buoyant enthusiasm – as they burst from the wings in the first act, The Classical Christmas. Then midway through, dancers Lauren Pschirrer with Mengjun Chen, Terez Dean with Benjamin Warner, and Haskins with Needham-Wood relished abandoning themselves in Wheeler’s new “We Three Kings.” With swooping fluidity, it opened up the stage and sent dancers soaring both physically and emotionally. To judge from this first effort for Smuin, Wheeler deserves more such opportunities in the future. This one’s definitely a keeper nail polish ballet slippers.
The second act, The Cool Christmas, had three more new works. The energetic and playful “J-I-N-G-L-E Bells” by Haskins let two couples cut loose to James Pierpont’s take on the old standard in a recording by Frank Sinatra and the Ralph Brewster Singers. The best joke for cognoscenti was the cygnets from “Swan Lake,” arms entwined, prancing across stage for a couple of bars nail polish ballet slippers. Dean with Dustin James and Tessa Barbour with Needham-Wood embodied the Haskins language perfectly, with all the appropriate rhythms and nuances, and were more than happy to communicate them to the audience..
Amy Seiwert, who danced with Smuin for nine years, began making dances for the company long before her choreographic career took off, and she’s now in demand across the country. This edition of “The Christmas Ballet” includes four of her dances and the premiere of “River,” a pas de deux to Joni Mitchell’s song of the same name nail polish ballet slippers. Though sensitively danced by Erin Yarbrough-Powell and Needham-Wood, its somber tone stood in sharp contrast to the more upbeat, joyous mood of the rest of the evening. The piece itself is finely detailed, as Seiwert continues to hone her craftsmanship, but it might be better showcased in another setting..
“White Christmas,” the evening’s finale, got a much-needed makeover. Smuin’s original version was a bit too quiet and physically understated for a holiday closer, and now that Needham-Wood has injected more full-bodied exuberance into the action we have the perfect segue to the zany curtain calls. Other highlights of the evening included “Ave Maria,” a solo danced by the truly divine Yarbrough-Powell. She evokes the kind of breath-catching, lump-in-throat response that happens so rarely on stage nail polish ballet slippers. She also brought her multi-faceted artistry to the pas de deux “Noel Nouvelet” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” with partner Jonathan Powell. The latter reveals she really knows how to use her eyes to maximum effect..
In addition to a sexy turn in “Santa Baby,” Erica Felsch excelled in “Licht Bensh’n” (Candle Blessing) and in “Dobra Notsch” (Sleep Well) with Needham-Wood. He later danced the best version of “Drummer Boy” in my long history of the watching this ballet, nailing the difficult technical challenges as well as the jazzy percussive feeling nail polish ballet slippers. Dean and Wheeler take the prize for best comedy team, as seen in both “Winter Weather” and “Home for the Holidays,” with their timing, goofiness and devil-may-care attitude — all qualities their fellow performers could show a bit more of..
