“Esperanza!’s” storyline follows Maggie as she joins a romance writing class hoping to finish her tale of a young woman’s daring romance with a pirate. As Maggie’s imaginary life heats up, so does her real life. Add in the drama created by her best friend’s creepy new husband and the comedy provided by the colorful characters in the writing class, and you have lots of opportunity for entertaining theater. Rhonda Joy Taylor as Maggie captures the character beautifully as she easily navigates between fantasy and reality, adding her polished vocals to myriad songs. Jene Bombardier (also the musical director) displayed her own impressive singing in the comedic role of Dinah, especially with Matthew Martin in “Talk Dirty to Me.” Many of the other cast members, unfortunately, had either the acting or the singing down but not both how to make pointe shoes smaller.

The ambitious musical includes Randall Nott’s nicely done projections and lighting, Diane McRice’s versatile set that extended to a second level boat deck, and Lisa Danz’s colorful costumes. Lovely dancers Anne Baker (also the choreographer) and Elizabeth Kahrer helped bridge the two worlds as Maggie’s mischievous muses how to make pointe shoes smaller. “Esperanza! … a Pirate Romance” continues through June 5 at the Campbell Theatre, 636 Ward St. in Martinez. Two local actors, Kyle Goldman and Khary L. Moye, journey across the Bay Bridge to perform in Custom Made Theatre’s spot-on production of John Guare’s “Six Degrees of Separation.”. You may remember Goldman as Tom Buchanan in “The Great Gatsby” and Moye as Lenny “Of Mice and Men,” both at Danville’s Role Players Ensemble. Stuart Bousel’s innovative direction begins the play with the entire cast on stage as Elizabeth (a marvelous Alisha Ehrlich) and her husband Flan (a splendid Matt Weimer) begin their tale of woe. It seems that Paul (an impressive Moye), claiming to be a college friend of their children and the son of Sidney Poitier, has arrived at their home. The poor young man has been mugged across from the couple’s pricey Manhattan apartment and remembering his friends’ parents lived close by has come to them for aid. Of course, Elizabeth and Flan agree to help him and become enthralled by the charming Paul in the process. That all changes, however, when they discover Paul has pulled this same gambit on several of their well-heeled friends how to make pointe shoes smaller. But, while Paul spent months learning about the parents and their college-age children through a mutual friend, he seems more intent on becoming part of their upper-class life style than robbing them..

Bousel has found a wonderful cast capable of handling Guare’s fast-paced, witty dialogue with ease while creating believable characters. Goldman does double duty as Elizabeth and Flan’s son and Paul’s one-night stand. Ryan Martin’s scenic design, Brooke Jennings’ costumes and especially William Campbell’s lighting add to the excellence of this show. “Six Degrees of Separation” continues through June 18 at 533 Sutter Street, in San Francisco how to make pointe shoes smaller.
