I still do other dances, but Argentine Tango becomes an all-consuming passion. There's nothing quite like it... "the whole of the relationship." Be warned!

Love to hear how you get on though. Do keep in touch.

I am thinking seriously of taking some Argentine tango lessons. I went to Argentina a few years back and took a couple of lessons, but I would call it dabbling, not serious tango dancing. Currently, I am trying to decide which ballroom dance(s) to focus on. My teacher of many years relocated and I must find a new instructor so this is the time for me to re-think what I want to learn. I have spent more time on mambo/salsa and other rhythm dances and also on Broadway.. In addition, as you probably noticed, I am one of the hip hop dancers on the NETSational Senior Dance team.

Going pretty good, Claire. Just got back from tango (actually milonga con traspie) class and milonga. Tomorrow I'm on duty at a 'Night of Latino Passion' here in Sheffield. Non-stop latin jive/blues then. But I reckon I can squeeze a little Argentine tango in there somewhere after a quiet word with the dj... Keep dancing. Do you do Argentine tango?

I have heard the term but never knew what it actually meant....I think, however, that you are correct--it refers to the Argentine tango as danced in the milongas---thank you!
I enjoyed the Barbara Garvey quote! I'll keep it in mind! How's it going, Russell?

There's a nice quote by Barbara Garvey which sums up the differences. It's intended as humour, of course; but many a true word...

“American tango is when a couple is on their honeymoon — it’s romantic and sexy with both on their best behaviour. Argentine tango is the whole of the relationship — with all the passion, pain, sorrow, joy, anger, humour, of real life. International tango is when the couple can’t stand each other and stay together just for the sake of the children.”

Cafe tango? Not an expression I've come across. Unless it refers to Argentine tango as danced in the milongas, as opposed to stage tango?

Who know the differences between and among the Argentine tango, International Tango, & Cafe Tango?
