I've been taking ballroom lessons for about three years now and after a bit of thought (and growth), I am thinking of transferring dance studios and am looking for a new coach who can better meet my needs. So my question to you is- What makes a good dance coach? What should I be looking for?
Someone who's ready to adjust the class to fit everyone's needs, I would imagine. And at the same time, push you to go further than you thought you could.
My best ballroom teachers have been those who paid a great deal of attention to technique--but not at the expense of the performance aspects of dance. They have always corrected me, not always gently, and have allowed and encouraged me to grow and experience that all things are possible, even those I thought were not. I would like to note that not all great dancers are great teachers and vice versa--I have been lucky enough to have had teachers who were both!
For me it is someone who challenges me. I've had so many dance coaches that are 'too nice' and I never really grew as a dancer with them, even if they're intentions were good.
Although I have heard unbelievable stories from some of my current dance teachers who said that their dance teachers when they were kids hit them with rulers if they did a move wrong. Talk about ruining the fun of dance! I am glad those days are (hopefully) long gone!
