Penny Saunders comes back for a third turn this season as she looks to become the resident choreographer breaking pointe shoes. For the program she is re-working a work titled “Snap,” a duet she originally created in a workshop at Hubbard Street. “I wanted to make something informal and playful, so I took something simple like pat-a-cake,” she says of the work featuring music by Olafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm. “It’s a bit of a game when you’re first meeting someone. A little flirty — I’ll tap you here and you tap me there. We took the actual pat-a-cake and deconstructed it, made new sections and put it back together.”..
The creators of two premieres haven’t chosen titles for their pieces. One is by Sofranko, who confesses, “I don’t want to give away too much because it’s still evolving. I have the idea of a community and how it deals with outside influences, but without being too literal. The music is so emotional — Schubert’s Impromptus — and I’m really moved by them so the piece does have a bit of a story.” breaking pointe shoes. Newly appointed associate artistic director Danielle Rowe has a commissioned a score by Alton San Giovanni for her latest choreographic endeavor. It will be performed live by instrumentalist David Knight, a member of the Warsaw-based band Low Roar, which is fronted by former East Bay singer-songwriter-musician Ryan Karazija breaking pointe shoes. “I’m doing quite a large piece — eight dancers — and it’s longer, around 20 minutes,” she says. “I’ve worked with the composer before. He’s young, from the pop world, studied music for film, and he’s a great collaborator. We created the concept together, but I don’t want to delve into it too much because I want the space to change my mind.”..
As Sofranko transitions from dancing as a soloist for an Francisco Ballet to taking the reins as new artistic director at Grand Rapids Ballet, he is adamant about his commitment to SFDanceWorks as well. “I’ve put a lot of my heart and soul into this company,” he says, “and it’s important it stays around and continues to grow. And Dani (Rowe) is someone who believes in that vision as well. I’ll be back in the summers for SFDW.”. Rowe is stepping in to cover the onsite details while Sofranko is in Michigan.
