Announced April 17 by Cal Performances’ executive and artistic director Matías Tarnopolsky, the season opens Sept. 23 with a Gala at the Greek Theatre featuring Marsalis, special guest Jon Batiste and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and concludes June 2, 2019, with a new “Pygmalion” by Eifman Ballet. It was a break from the norm, since the company usually presents just two or three freshly minted ballets each season from in-house dance-makers and invited guest choreographers. A decade on, Tomasson has decided again to pull out the stops, as the company offers brand new work from 12 artists, who come from just a few blocks away to as far away as Europe.
