This weekend will see the final performances of Dance Series 01 of Smuin Ballet’s 25th season ballet dance shoes. The season began in September with the first performances of Series 01 in Walnut Creek, San Francisco and Carmel, then the Smuin Christmas Ballet happened in those same cities and Mountain View in November and December. Thursday through Sunday, Series 01 will conclude at the Mountain View Performing Arts Center. It is a season of special note to Smuin Artistic Director Celia Fushille. “This is my 12th year directing the company. (Founder) Michael (Smuin) directed the company for 13 years. Next season will also be my 13th.”..

Fushille remains “very devoted to the company and to Michael (who died in 2007) and keeping his legacy alive. There is a certain flavor to Smuin Ballet. We do what we want to do very well. We like to have fun. And it’s all in the spirit of Michael Smuin.”. Smuin, who had been a star at San Francisco Ballet before founding his own company, was known for mixing classical and contemporary dance, with considerable flair. Fushille left San Francisco Ballet for Smuin, where she became Michael’s principal dancer, his muse, and eventually, his associate director ballet dance shoes.
